Three routes through Making Tax Digital — do it yourself, done with you, done for you

Choose your own route through Making Tax Digital

We’ve spent the last few months building something we’re really proud of, and it’s time to tell you about it.

If you’ve been anywhere near the words “Making Tax Digital” this year, you’ll know it went live in April for sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000. The first quarterly submissions have already gone in. And from April 2027 the threshold drops to £30,000, which means a lot more people will need to do it.

We’ve already written a plain-English guide to MTD that covers what it is, who it affects, and what you need to do. If you haven’t read it yet, that’s your starting point.

I know what it’s like, though. You might be sitting there thinking, “OK, I understand what MTD is now. But how am I actually going to do this?”

The answer’s going to be different for everyone.

Some of you have been doing your own books for years.

You know what you’re doing, and you’re confident. You just need someone to help you get set up properly for the new rules so you can keep doing what you’re doing, but with this MTD stuff folded in.

Some of you are happy managing the day-to-day but want someone keeping an eye on things.

You like the relief of knowing that there’s a pro checking your work each quarter, catching anything you’ve missed, and handling the submissions so you’re not worrying about HMRC deadlines.

And some of you would quite like to hand the whole thing over.

Receipts in, everything else handled, and quarterly reports landing in your inbox so you always know where you stand. Peace of mind, basically.

All three positions are completely understandable. And we now have a package for each one, so you can make your choice more easily.

The West Highland Way (bear with me)

We’ve started using this analogy with clients and it seems to land, so here it goes.

Think of Making Tax Digital like setting off on the West Highland Way. It’s a long walk (I know, I’ve done some it!). There’s new territory to navigate, midges and weather to deal with, and you need to get from one end to the other in good shape.

Do It Yourself is like getting a proper briefing before you set off.

We sit down with you, go over the map, help you choose the right gear, and make sure you know how to read the route. Then you walk it yourself, at your own pace. At the end, before you submit your Final Declaration, we’ll check your logbook to make sure nothing’s been missed. Three focused sessions: software guidance, setup training, and a year-end sense check. Modules from £49 + VAT, or £299 + VAT for all three.

Done With You is like walking with checkpoints.

You carry your own records and do your own bookkeeping throughout the year. But each quarter we review your work, fix minor errors, and submit your update to HMRC. At year-end, we prepare and file your Final Declaration. You’re in charge of the journey; we just make sure you arrive. From £45/month + VAT.

Done For You is like having a porter carry the bags.

You still walk, you still get the views and the fresh air. But someone else handles the heavy lifting. Your only job is to send us your receipts. We take care of the bookkeeping, the quarterly submissions, the performance reports, and the year-end return. From £57/month + VAT.

Which one is right for you?

That depends on how you work, how much time you’ve got, and how comfortable you are with the technology. Take a moment right now to ask yourself, “Which one feels right for me?”

If you’ve always done your own self-assessment and you like being hands-on, the DIY route gives you proper training and a safety net at year-end without taking away any of your independence.

If you’re comfortable with FreeAgent or Xero but want the reassurance of someone reviewing your records each quarter, Done With You keeps you in the driving seat with professional support built in.

And if you’d genuinely rather not think about any of it, Done For You means the only thing you need to worry about is forwarding your receipts.

Even if MTD doesn’t apply to you yet

If your income is currently between £20,000 and £50,000, you’re going to be brought into MTD over the next couple of years. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027 and to £20,000 from April 2028.

Getting set up with the right digital tools before you have to is a lot easier than a mad scramble when a deadline’s breathing down your neck. And knowing which route would give you the right amount of relief means that you can plan ahead rather than panic.

Have a look at the three options, and see which one feels like the right fit. And when you’re ready, get in touch.

You don’t have to figure this out alone, I promise. And it doesn’t have to be an uphill climb, either (sorry, I couldn’t resist!).

Be you. Be brave. Build a better business.
